On the Western outskirts of Waco, you will find the communities of China Spring and Crawford. With combined populations in 2021 of approximately 2,200 people, both areas are significantly smaller in scale than the adjacent City of Waco. These two areas are often lumped together due to their proximity to one another and their similar ways of life, but they are still very much their own small towns.
Central Texas Charm in Greater Waco
If coming from Waco proper, the drive west will likely take you down Highway 6 where you split the difference and go left toward Crawford or right toward China Spring. Both towns are approximately a 25-minute drive from the heart of Waco. This makes for a short commute if you plan to work in town or even need the amenities the big city of Waco provides.

A Fast-Growing Community
While these parts of the Greater Waco area are amongst the fastest growing when it comes to new residential construction, commercial business is still trying to catch up. Neither city is known for their shopping or restaurants, but each offers a unique perspective of less suburban living.
Crawford is home to the gorgeous, historical Tonkawa Falls which draws visitors and locals alike each year. China Spring lies just 10 minutes up the road from Waco Regional Airport allowing easy access to the one of three flights a day to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Each city has its own school district with China Spring reaching 4A in size, while Crawford remains sized only to 2A.

Additional Information
Transportation
It’s a solid 20-30 minutes to get to the ends of these communities but you can expect little traffic and highway speed limits.
Grocery Stores
No HEB (though it’s been talked about coming forever) or any other main grocery to speak of. You’ll need to do what you can with the
School System
China Spring is a 4A High School that recently won the State Championship in football. While it is larger than Robinson, Lorena, and McGregor – it still feels like more of a small rural community than when compared to Midway or Waco ISD. Crawford is considerably smaller being a 2A school with an above average rating and much more of a country school feel.
Restaurants
Griff’s in China Spring may look like a gas station, but the pancakes, catfish and country cooking are hard to beat. Tres Hermanos is a great mexican food option but other than that you have Sonic, McDonalds, Bush’s Chicken and that’s about it!
The Amsler Cafe is about all that Crawford has to offer food wise but the Chaney Brother’s Coffee Company is cute as can be!
